There are mainly two reasons why this occurs. Firstly the food loss which happens between producer and the market. Second one is known as food waste which results when purchased food is discarded by the consumer.

Chief executive of Tropic Biosciences, Gilad Gershon suggests that by increasing the shelf life of the fruit further ripening of banana can be slowed down and the waste of food due to transportation delays can be minimized.   • Careful shopping of only required items. Avoiding wasteful instant purchases that result in spoilage of food. Proper storage of fruits and vegetables.
  • Disposing the excess food to the needy and have-nots when it is fit for consumption. Discarded food scrapes can be fed to the animals directly. Finally composting is a better option as expired food is dumped into the landfills where it rots and produces methane and other green house gases.
  • Discarded bread and other cereal products can be fed to chickens and saved from being wasted.
